I personally would take inspiration from forhims.co.uk and have the portal 'stripped back' - still correctly branded though!

Shared cookies:
'get session' - set to 'yes' if the user has done something in the portal that means we should trigger the /portal/session.json check (by default we will not trigger the ajax call)
'cookie permissions' - we need to use the same js/cookies here to avoid showing the user the same messaging twice

Data requirements from the portal:

/portal/session.json - this endpoint will be called when the cookie 'get session' is set to 'yes' - we'll use it to update the cart counter or change the login links etc

/portal/products-raw.json - this json file is a full array of all product data and pricing that we will digest to sync the front-end static files with the portal - it doesn't matter if its a large file.
